The APG project utilizes MGEL's “state of the art” laboratory information management system (LIMS).  This LIMS was designed by Philippe Chouvarine (MGEL), Surya Saha (MGEL), Dr. Dorrie Main (CUGI), and Stephen Ficklin (CUGI).  It efficiently handles the data management and analysis tasks associated with DBI-0421717 and other current MGEL projects/operations, yet it can be easily expanded to meet new challenges such as those associated with large-scale physical mapping and genome sequencing.  The LIMS is anchored by a file server (Hewlett-Packard DL 360 G3), database server (HP DL 380 G4), Linux server, and web server.  The file server acts as a central repository providing data storage facilities for the other servers.  Scripts developed at MGEL or by colleagues are used for processing data from the file server on the Linux server.  The database server and the web server facilitate remote access of the LIMS. The database server uses a SQL Server database to store and query the data via a web-based interface. MGEL servers are housed at Mississippi State University’s Information Technology Services (ITS) center.  ITS manages all major database/web services at MS State and consequently has extensive security, data backup, and UPS services in place already.  These services are free to university researchers, and thus considerable equipment and management costs were avoided by collaboration with ITS.  Moreover, ITS has provided technical expertise in setting up and managing these servers, thus expediting full utilization of these computational resources.  At MGEL, computational tasks are performed using workstations located in offices and lab areas.  MGEL currently has a series of powerful PCs (all with Inter- and Intranet connections) including thirteen PC workstations and one Linux workstation (Dell Precision 360n Mini-Tower).  All of these computers can be used to access data on the MGEL servers (with proper userid/password-based clearance).  Colleagues and collaborators are afforded access to relevant data on MGEL servers through MGEL's secure, password-protected Intranet system.
